Dog diseases are caused by different types of parasites or bacteria by either infestation or viral infection methods.
Some dog disease symptoms may take long time before they show the first signs of illness and some may only show signs when they become serious life threatening. Viral and bacterial diseases can cause damage to many important organs in the body and some of them are unable to be detect for years.

Types and symptoms of dog diseases in detail

Viral infections

Rabies (hydrophobia)

A fatal disease that can affect any mammal including human. Rabies may also spread through exposure to infected animals. The infection period normally between 2-12 weeks and can be as long as 2 years.
Rabies disease symptoms are cerebral dysfunction, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, paranoia, partial paralysis, confusion, abnormal behavior, hallucinations and delirium.
Rabies can be prevented by vaccination both in humans and other animals.

Canine parvovirus (CPV)

A contagious virus affecting dogs. The disease can be spread from one dog to other by direct or indirect contact with feces. It can be severe and dangerous especially in puppies. Infected dog will show illness signs within 3 to 10 days.
Canine parvovirus symptoms are high fever, lethargy, vomiting and bloody diarrhea result in dehydration which lead to other infections and diseases.
CPV can be detected by Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA), hemagglutination test or through electron microscopy.
Survival rate depends on how quickly CPV is detected and the effective the treatment.

Canine coronavirus

A virus of the family coronaviridae that causes a highly contagious intestinal disease and spread through feces of infected dogs. The virus invades the small intestine then induce cell death (apoptosis). The incubation period is very quick usually within 1-3 days.
Canine coronavirus symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, and anorexia.
Canine coronavirus can be diagnosis by detection of virus in the dog feces.
Treatment for this disease is not as serious as CPV and usually requires medication for diarrhea only. Fatalities are rare but some affected dogs may require intravenous fluids for dehydration. The virus can be eliminate by most disinfectants.
Prevention vaccine for coronavirus is available and it is usually given to puppies.
